Putting a car into storage changes how it is used, who can reach it and how quickly a problem might be noticed. Use this checklist to prepare questions for your storage provider, insurer and security installer. Follow the vehicle and security manufacturers' instructions for the actual procedures.
Before the car arrives
- Check policy conditions. Confirm whether the storage location, access arrangements or length of storage affect your cover.
- Check monitoring. Make sure any required subscription is active and the monitoring provider has current contact details.
- Agree access. Establish who may move the vehicle, how authorisation is provided and how keys and tags will be managed.
- Plan battery care. Discuss the manufacturer's recommended maintenance routine and any requirements of the installed security system.
When the vehicle needs to move
A storage provider may need to reposition a car or release it to a transporter. Agree a clear process before that happens. Ask the monitoring provider or installer about approved transport or service modes, if available. Do not disable protection informally or leave it suspended after the work is finished.
Keep instructions for authorised staff separate from general booking details. There is no need to share a security PIN, override code or hidden device location in an ordinary email enquiry.
Keep a useful record
Keep the product name, installation documentation, subscription information and support contacts available away from the car. Make a note of who to contact at the storage facility and who should respond to a monitoring alert. A practical response plan matters as much as knowing where to view the vehicle in an app.
Before returning to the road
Confirm that any temporary mode has been cancelled in accordance with the product instructions. Check the required tags are present, the authorised driver understands the system and any monitoring account details remain current. If something is unclear, contact the installer or provider before relying on the setup.
Review the installation if your routine changes
Moving from occasional use to daily driving, changing storage providers or adding another driver is a good reason to review the arrangements. Autosecureshop can discuss tracking options and immobiliser compatibility around the new routine. Our installation approach explains what to prepare for an enquiry.
